Why Waiting Until Everything Is Perfect Is Quietly Stealing Your Desire

“I’ll focus on my desire after I lose the weight.”
I’ve heard some version of that sentence for years.
Sometimes the woman is waiting for her menopause symptoms to ease up. Sometimes she’s waiting for the kids to finally move out, for work to slow down, for the relationship to find its footing again, or for life to just feel a little less like a marathon she didn’t sign up for.
The details change. The pattern never does.
Pleasure gets postponed. Desire gets postponed. And quietly, without anyone making an official announcement, life gets postponed.
The Land of “After,” I’ll Have Desire
There’s a place many women live that no one talks about. It doesn’t have a zip code, but you’d recognize it immediately.
It’s the land of after.
After I lose the weight. After I feel more like myself. After the kids leave. After the hot flashes stop. After we finally work things out. After I get my energy back.
In this place, the future is where pleasure is allowed to exist. And today, this body, this season, this version of life, is something to push through until you arrive somewhere better.
Here’s the problem with that: desire doesn’t wait politely in a holding room until conditions improve.
Desire grows through engagement. It deepens through participation. And it quietly fades when you keep telling it to come back later.
Think about it this way: you wouldn’t wait until you were already fit to go for a walk. You wouldn’t wait until you were perfectly calm to try meditation. You wouldn’t wait until you were confident to have a conversation.
Yet so many women expect desire to return fully formed, like it’s been sitting in a drawer somewhere, untouched, just waiting for the right moment.
It doesn’t work that way.
Why Menopause Becomes the Perfect Excuse to Grab Desire
Menopause gives the waiting game a very convincing storyline.
Your body changes in ways you didn’t fully expect. Sleep becomes unreliable. Energy comes and goes on its own schedule. The body you’ve lived in your whole life suddenly feels as if it’s undergoing renovation with no clear end date.
Intimacy gets pushed aside. Desire feels distant. You tell yourself: not now, maybe later, when things settle.
I understand the logic. What I want you to see is the cost.
Women wait years, sometimes an entire decade, for permission to feel worthy of pleasure again. Years of living at a distance from their own desire. Years of postponing something that was never meant to be optional.
That’s a steep price for waiting.
Desire Follows Action — Not the Other Way Around
One of the most powerful shifts you can make is understanding that desire is rarely the starting point. Most of the time, it’s the result.
A woman reads something that makes her feel alive. Someone takes a long walk at dusk and remembers what it feels like to be in her body. A couple has one honest conversation, and something loosens. An afternoon with no agenda creates a sense of freedom that’s been missing for years.
Small experiences create momentum. Pleasure creates more pleasure. Curiosity feeds desire. Feeling alive has a way of making you want more of being alive.
None of that requires a perfect body, a perfect relationship, or a perfect season of life. It requires one thing: stopping the wait.
A Question Worth Sitting With
What have you been postponing?
Not abstractly — specifically. What have you quietly told yourself you’re not allowed to enjoy yet?
Is it dating? Wearing something that makes you feel beautiful? Traveling somewhere you’ve always wanted to go? Making space for intimacy? Letting yourself be seen?
Now ask: what’s the condition attached to it? What has to happen first before you’ve given yourself permission?
And then, the most important question of all:
Why not now?
Not in some grand, rearrange-your-whole-life way. Just one small step. One enjoyable experience this week. One decision to stop treating your desire like something to earn.
Try This: The “Why Not Now?” Desire Practice
Pick one thing you’ve been waiting to enjoy until life looks different.
Write it down.
Answer the question honestly: Why not now?
Don’t catalog everything standing in your way. Look for one reason you can move toward it, even slightly, this week.
Not next month. Not after the scale moves. Not when everything finally calms down.
This week.
The Truth No One Says Loudly Enough
Your body doesn’t need to be finished changing before you’re allowed to feel pleasure in it.
The timing doesn’t need to be perfect. The circumstances don’t need to line up. You don’t need to arrive at some future, improved version of yourself before desire gets a seat at the table.
Desire comes back to women who stop waiting for a better version of their life, and start showing up, fully, for the one they’re already living.
That woman can be you. Starting now.
