When You Finally Feel Like Yourself Again (And Then Freak Out)

By Allie Theiss, MSc, CSC, ABS
Sex Coach & Integrative Wellness Sexologist

You notice it in the smallest ways.

You hum while unloading the dishwasher.
You put on perfume just because.
You initiate sex—not because you should, but because you want to.

You catch yourself smiling… and it’s not fake.
Your body feels less foreign.
You’re here again.

And it feels so damn good.

But then something weird happens.
That little flicker of joy? Desire? Confidence?

It triggers panic.

Your brain kicks into “emergency mode”:

“Why am I feeling this way?”
“This can’t last.”
“I’m just setting myself up for disappointment.”

You can go from being turned on to being tuned out in seconds.
From sensual to suspicious.
From the present to protect yourself at all costs.

This is a real mindf*ck, right?

But I promise you—you’re not doing it wrong.
You’re doing it exactly the way someone reemerging from survival mode would.

Here’s what’s actually happening:

When you’ve been emotionally disconnected, hormonally depleted, or stuck in a season of “just get through the day”…
Feeling good feels unsafe.

Desire? Intimacy? Confidence?
They’re unfamiliar—and unfamiliar feels risky.

So you try to shut it down before it shuts you down.

This isn’t sabotage. It’s your nervous system doing what it was wired to do: protect you.

But protection doesn’t have to mean disconnection.

Let’s anchor the shift instead of fearing it.

You don’t need to “fix” anything.
You just need to recognize the new—and create a safe environment around it.

Try this simple practice today:

Sensual Anchoring Ritual
5 minutes to remind your body it’s safe to feel good.

  1. Put on a song that makes you feel sexy, powerful, or emotionally lit up. One that makes your shoulders loosen and your hips want to sway.

  2. Place your hand on your heart, breathe in slowly, and say:

    “It’s safe to enjoy this.”
    “I’m allowed to feel good.”
“This version of me belongs here.”

  3. Move. Lightly. Slowly. Mindfully.
Let your body remember joy without needing to explain it.

No mirrors. No pressure. No performance.
Just you and your “yes.”
